Ken looked over the balcony at the tiny white flakes falling delicately from the clouds. A gentle breeze brushed against his cheek softly, like a tiny, gloveless hand, freezing in the cold. His eyes reflected the moonlight that illuminated the colourless sky, escaping through a small part in the clouds. Below the sky, the layer of darkness coated with glowing white stretched out endlessly in front of him, reminding him of icing sugar dusted generously on top of a chocolate cake. The snow, which had just begun falling, was the thing that drew him onto the balcony at that early hour of the morning. It wasn't, however, the reason that he was unable to sleep.
Ken's eyes suddenly blurred as the scenery before him lost his focus. He looked around to his left to see a girl almost his height clinging tightly to a coat that looked far too big for her as it gushed around her neck, flowed over her shoulders and spilled over the floor where she stood, pooling around her feet. James knew he wasn't supposed to blow into it the bottom of the GameBoy game cartridge to clear out the dust. The instruction booklet made that clear, in capital letters, even though it didn't say why. His father told him that it had something to do with moisture. When you blow into the cartridge, the moisture from your breath lands on the little gold tabs in the opening at the end, and it could short circuit the GameBoy. James took his father's words seriously and always looked for an alternative, but sometimes, when nobody was looking and he couldn't find something else to get the dust out, he would blow in the bottom and then let it dry for a few minutes before he started playing.
This time, James looked around his room for something he could wipe the dust out with. This was his favourite game of his entire collection of old GameBoy games, and he didn't want to chance wrecking it. What he needed was a cloth, and he knew he had one around somewhere.
